The Summer School was a truly exciting and inspiri

The Summer School was a truly exciting and inspiring way to begin the year. It was wonderful to see the focus, commitment, and enthusiasm shown by all students, and to feel the positive energy throughout the studios.

We are delighted to share that nine scholarships to international summer intensives were awarded during this year’s Summer School, offering opportunities in Italy, Canada, and Japan. In addition, for the first time, we were honoured to receive exclusive permission for students to learn William Forsythe repertoire, coached by internationally renowned director Kathryn Bennetts, who has staged several Forsythe works all around the world and also with The Australian Ballet, including Artifact Suite. Together, these experiences highlight the exceptional opportunities made possible through the TPA workshops, providing students with valuable exposure, inspiration, and pathways to international training experiences.

We would like to sincerely thank all students who participated for their dedication, focus, and passion throughout the Summer School. A heartfelt thank you also to our wonderful TPA faculty for creating such a supportive and inspiring learning environment.

Our TPA Summer Workshops have been truly inspiring, the studios filled with excitement, energy, dedication, and a shared love of dance.

A heartfelt thank you to all the wonderful teachers who delivered such inspiring and thoughtful workshops for both our Junior and Senior participants. Your generosity of knowledge, expertise and passion created a magical week of dance at TPA for all!

Special thanks to our guest artists Kathryn Bennetts and Melissa Boniface — it was an absolute joy to have you share your sensational workshops and expertise with our students.

It has been fabulous to welcome dancers from all around the world, with students joining us from Singapore, Indonesia, and New Zealand, as well as from regional towns and other states across Australia — Tasmania, Ballarat, Coffs Harbour, Bathurst and Cowra, to name just a few. The sense of connection and community across borders has been incredibly special.

A truly rare and unique privilege for our students was the opportunity to experience specialised workshops learning company repertoire taught by Kathryn Bennetts, sharing works by the renowned international choreographer William Forsythe — an unforgettable and invaluable experience for every dancer involved.

We were also delighted to award many scholarships for international opportunities, made possible through our partnership with Ballet Unblanche, opening exciting experiences for dancers abroad.

Thank you to everyone who made these workshops so meaningful. What a beautiful week for students- making new friends, learning amazing choreography and coming together from all over the world and country to celebrate our shared passion for dance 🤍

A packed auditorium expressed enormous delight, appreciation, and applause for the outstanding performances throughout the season.
Congratulations to each and every young artist who performed so beautifully and brought such joy to the audience — we are so incredibly proud of you all.

It was a privilege to welcome such stunning special guest artists from The Australian Ballet, who performed the roles of the Nutcracker Prince and the grand pas de deux of Sugar Plum Fairy and Prince. A heartfelt thank you to Benedicte Bemet, Brett Chynoweth, Yuumi Yamada, Hugo Dumapit and Charlton Tough who delighted and thrilled the audience with their superb performances. Your artistry was truly inspiring for our young dancers.

We are delighted to welcome Josef Brown as Special Guest Artist in this year’s production of The Nutcracker, appearing in the captivating role of Drosselmeyer.

A former Soloist with The Australian Ballet, Josef’s distinguished career spans leading dance companies and stages in Australia and internationally. His work includes performances with Modern Dans Topluluğu in Ankara, Sydney Dance Company, and acclaimed musical theatre roles, including Johnny Castle in Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage.

Josef’s versatility also extends to screen, with notable appearances in Dance Academy, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries, and Neighbours. Beyond performance, he has contributed widely as a writer, producer, choreographer and passionate arts advocate.

Drawing on this rich and diverse career across dance, theatre and screen, Josef brings exceptional depth, charisma and dramatic presence to the role of Drosselmeyer. His performance adds a powerful and theatrical dimension to this much-loved Christmas classic.

🌟 Special Guest Announcement 🌟
We are thrilled to welcome Charlton Tough, Artist with The Australian Ballet, as one of our featured guest artists in this year’s production of The Nutcracker!

Growing up in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Charlton began his dance journey in 2011 at the age of seven at the Utassy Ballet School under the mentorship of Sue Hayes. Showing early promise, he joined The Melbourne City Youth Ballet in 2015 under Yuiko Masukawa, before commencing formal training at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School in 2017.

Charlton’s commitment, talent and artistic maturity were recognised when he was accepted into The Australian Ballet School in 2019, graduating as Dux of the School in 2023. A career highlight came early in 2016 when he joined the cast of Houston Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet during their Melbourne season—an experience shared with Andrew Murphy, who later became one of his teachers at The Australian Ballet School.

In 2024, Charlton proudly joined The Australian Ballet, bringing his refined technique, focus and expressive performance quality to Australia’s national company.

This December, Charlton will perform alongside Principal Artists, Soloists and Artists of The Australian Ballet, together with the talented dancers of the Tanya Pearson Academy, in a spectacular full-length production of The Nutcracker certain to delight audiences of all ages.

Born in Sydney, New South Wales, Hugo began dancing at the age of four. His diverse training spans more than a decade and includes The Hills Dance Factory, McDonald College, and The Australian Ballet School. In 2022, Hugo was thrilled to officially join The Australian Ballet, bringing to the company his passion, artistry and vibrant stage presence. In 2023, he was promoted to Coryphée, recognising his growing artistry and standout performances.

This December, Hugo will appear alongside Principal Artists, Soloists and Artists of The Australian Ballet, together with the talented dancers of the Tanya Pearson Academy, in a spectacular full-length performance of The Nutcracker certain to enchant audiences of all ages.

Throughout his residency, Medhi worked closely with our Full-Time and Transition students, offering them invaluable coaching grounded in his refined French technique, combined with the depth of experience gained from his international career with the Paris Opera Ballet School, English National Ballet, Royal New Zealand Ballet and Nice Opera Ballet.

His emphasis on precision, musicality and artistry had an immediate impact in the studio. Our students were inspired and motivated by his clarity, professionalism and the generosity with which he shared his craft.

About Medhi Angot

Born in France and trained at the prestigious Paris Opera Ballet School, Medhi’s career took flight when he joined the English National Ballet in London at just 17 years old. He performed as a soloist in many of the company’s celebrated productions before moving to the Royal New Zealand Ballet, where he danced principal roles over a period of five years.

In 2013, Medhi returned to France as a Principal Dancer with the Nice Opera Ballet, establishing himself in both classical and contemporary repertoire.
In 2021, he joined the New Zealand School of Dance as a permanent Classical tutor, bringing his depth of knowledge and artistic insight to the next generation of dancers.

Since April 2023, Medhi has been in high demand as a freelance ballet coach and consultant. He prepares students for elite international competitions including the Prix de Lausanne and the Youth America Grand Prix, and continues to share his expertise as a guest teacher with the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

We are honoured to have Medhi Angot with us this December and look forward to the inspiration, artistry and professionalism he will bring to our students.

We are delighted to welcome Yuumi Yamada, Senior Artist of The Australian Ballet, as one of our featured guest artists in this year’s production of The Nutcracker!

Born in Ami, Japan, Yuumi began her training at the Sakurai Classical Ballet Studio before moving to Melbourne at the age of 16 to study at The Australian Ballet School. She toured with The Dancers Company in 2015 and joined The Australian Ballet in 2017. Yuumi was promoted to Coryphée in 2018, Soloist in 2021, and Senior Artist in 2023.

Yuumi’s repertoire includes many iconic roles, such as Clara in The Nutcracker, the Fairy of Musicality in The Sleeping Beauty, Swanilda in Coppélia, and the Second Pas de Deux in William Forsythe’s Artifact Suite. Her refined technique and radiant presence make her one of the company’s most captivating emerging stars.

This December, Yuumi will join Principal Artists, Soloists and Artists from The Australian Ballet, together with the talented dancers of the Tanya Pearson Academy, for a spectacular full-length performance of The Nutcracker that will enchant audiences of all ages.

We are delighted to welcome Brett Chynoweth, Principal Artist of The Australian Ballet, as one of our featured guest artists in this year’s production of The Nutcracker!

Born on Wurundjeri Country (Naarm/Melbourne), Brett began dancing at the age of five before training at The Australian Ballet School, where he was awarded the prestigious Dr HC (Nuggett) Coombes Travelling Scholarship, allowing him to study in New York and Toronto. He joined The Australian Ballet in 2009 and was promoted to Principal Artist in 2018 on his hometown stage.

Brett has performed leading roles across both classical and contemporary repertoire, including Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, and The Sleeping Beauty, and has appeared as a Guest Principal with Birmingham Royal Ballet. His celebrated portrayal of The Prince in Peter Wright’s The Nutcracker has become one of his signature roles, performed internationally to great acclaim.

This December, Brett will join Principal Artists, Soloists and Artists from The Australian Ballet, together with the talented dancers of the Tanya Pearson Academy, for a spectacular full-length performance of The Nutcracker that will delight audiences of all ages.

We are delighted to welcome Benedicte Bemet, Principal Artist of The Australian Ballet, as one of our featured guest artists in this year’s production of The Nutcracker!

Born in Mackay and raised on the Gold Coast, Benedicte began dancing at the age of three and trained in Hong Kong before joining The Australian Ballet School at just 14. She entered The Australian Ballet in 2012 and rose swiftly to become Principal Artist in 2019.

Her acclaimed performances include Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, and Clara in The Nutcracker — a role that earned her a Green Room Award nomination.

Benedicte will join Principal Artists, Soloists and Artists from The Australian Ballet, together with the talented dancers of the Tanya Pearson Academy, for this magical full-length production that will enchant audiences of all ages.

☀️ Special Guest Announcement | TPA’s 2026 Junior & Senior Summer Workshops

We are delighted to welcome Melissa McCabe, internationally acclaimed former ballerina of The Australian Ballet, the West Australian Ballet and Alberta Ballet (Canada), as a Special Guest Teacher for both our Junior and Senior Summer Workshops, running January 19–23, 2026.

Born in Sydney, Melissa trained at the Tanya Pearson Academy before joining The Australian Ballet School, where she received multiple awards for excellence and artistry. Upon graduation, she was offered a position with The Australian Ballet, marking the beginning of a distinguished professional career.

Melissa went on to perform with both the West Australian Ballet and Alberta Ballet (Canada), appearing in major classical and contemporary productions and touring widely across Australia and North America.

Now a highly respected educator and adjudicator, Melissa brings extensive professional experience and a deep understanding of classical technique and performance. She is dedicated to helping each dancer develop strong technical foundations, artistic awareness, and confidence in their individual expression.

At TPA’s 2026 Summer Workshops, Melissa will teach across both programs:
🌿 Junior Summer Workshops (ages 7–10) — The Jungle Book themed creative and classical sessions
🩰 Senior Summer Workshops (ages 11+) — Ballet, Repertoire, and Private Coaching

☀️ International Guest Announcement | TPA’s 2026 Senior Summer Workshops

We are honoured to welcome Kathryn Bennetts, one of the world’s most distinguished ballet masters, as our International Guest Artist for the 2026 Senior Summer Workshops (January 19–23).

Born in Sydney, Kathryn Bennetts trained at the Scully Borovansky School of Ballet and the Australian Ballet School before joining The Australian Ballet and later Stuttgart Ballet, where she rose to Soloist under the direction of Marcia Haydée. Her stage career brought her together with many of the world’s most renowned choreographers — Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Hans van Manen, John Neumeier, Maurice Béjart, Glen Tetley, Lar Lubovitch, Heinz Spoerli, and William Forsythe.

Following an early transition from the stage, Kathryn became a leading international teacher and ballet mistress, working with companies such as Stuttgart Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Royal Danish Ballet, La Scala Ballet, and The Australian Ballet.

In 1989 she joined William Forsythe’s Frankfurt Ballet as Ballet Mistress, where she was instrumental in shaping the company’s daily artistic work and in staging Forsythe’s repertoire around the world — from Paris Opera Ballet to New York City Ballet and The Royal Ballet.

From 2005–2012, Kathryn served as Artistic Director of the Royal Ballet of Flanders, leading the company to international acclaim and receiving the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance.

Today, Kathryn continues to coach and stage Forsythe’s masterpieces with major ballet companies globally.
Her return to Australia for TPA’s 2026 Senior Summer Workshops offers students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience her teaching, artistic insight, and direct connection to one of the most revolutionary choreographers of our time.
